Want or Need?

Faith Focus for the Week

What do I cherish? On what do I spend the majority of my time or money? What fullfills me?

Distinguishing wants from needs is essential to developing a well-formed, mature conscience.

“Christians live this way in the confidence that comes from faith: for they know that the human goods they cherish and cultivate will be perfected — and they themselves will be fulfilled.” — Stewardship: A Disciple’s Response, U.S. Catholic bishops’ stewardship pastoral

Our consumer society hawks an almost endless amount of human goods. Grocery stores stock dozens of different bottled waters. Hardware stores display scores of different cupboard handles. Shoe stores have enough styles to make our heads spin. And that’s not even touching what shopping the World Wide Web offers and the “Internet of Things.”

How much of what you purchase will you truly cherish in the long run; how much is merely caving tino impulse, advertising, passing fashion or even greed? As Christian stewards in the marketplace, one key lies in distinguishing wants from needs. What you cherish and how you use your time and money indicate your values, beliefs and where your heart lies.
